Summer is here! Stay young... stay out of the sun!

The sun is the number one enemy of our skin and is responsible for the majority of the premature accelerated aging we see here at ReVita Medispa. The sun also has a number of other harmful effects, including risk of skin cancers, cataract formation and negative effects on our immune systems.

The sun produces both visible & invisible rays. The invisible rays, known as ultraviolet-A (UVA) and ultraviolet-B (UVB), cause most of the problems. Both cause suntan, sunburn, and sun damage. There is no "safe" UV light. Many people mistakenly believe that a tan is a sign of good health. In fact, tanning is a sign of skin damage and should be avoided. This includes the use of tanning booths. Unfortunately, the effects of prolonged sun exposure is not seen until well after the damage is done, so get out of the sun now and save your skin!

The Sun is Your Enemy - Learn How To Protect Yourself!

Maintaining beautiful, healthy skin begins first and foremost with sun sense. Chronic exposure to the sun also causes premature aging, which over time can make the skin become thick, wrinkled, and leathery. Since it occurs gradually, often manifesting itself many years after the majority of a person's sun exposure, premature aging is often regarded as an unavoidable, normal part of growing older. However with proper protection from UV radiation most premature aging of the skin can be avoided.

Here are some tips in order to prevent further sun damage to the skin:

Always wear sunscreen, even in the winter or on cloudy days. Choose a broad -spectrum sunscreen to block both UVA and UVB. Select products with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or greater
Apply sunscreen 30-60 minutes before sun exposure
Don't be stingy! Apply at least 30 mLs of sunscreen from head to toe!
Reapply sunscreen after exercising, swimming even if the sunscreen is waterproof or water resistant
Avoid sun exposure during peak hours, generally 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you must be outside during these sun-intense hours, head for shade-an umbrella, a tree or a covered patio
Wear a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and tightly woven clothing
Use a higher SPF on nose, ears and lips (ensure the product is fragrance free)
Be aware of medications that could cause you to be photosensitive
Tanning salons and sunlamps are not a safe way to tan. Tanning salons do not give you a "safe tan without burning" - No tan is a safe tan. A tan is evidence of sun damage!
