Melasma is the overproduction of melanin that causes darkening of the facial skin typically around the cheeks, the mid forehead, jaw line and around the mouth. Melasma is usually caused by estrogen supplements, birth control pills, pregnancy, hypersensitivity to normal estrogen levels and sun exposure.
