Before the procedure begins, a local anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area. Then a laser catheter will be inserted into the saphenous vein using ultrasound guidance. The laser is then activated and the heat from the laser will cause the walls of the vein to stick together and the vein will disappear from the leg and will reroute the blood through the circulation system. The catheter is withdrawn and the vein is sealed, stopping the varicose vein. A compression stockings and bandage will be applied by the doctor and the patient will be asked to wear these for the following three days. The patient will then be encouraged to wear the stocking for the next three weeks.

EVLT laser vein treatment can offer many benefits to individuals who suffer from vericose veins. It can clear veins that have undergone injury or trauma; clear weak vein walls; help abnormal valves; and, aid normal veins whose vein walls were weakened by hormones (ex pregnancy). Patients can expect the recovery process to be quick and easy. Patients may experience some discomfort in the legs, usually described as a tightness for the 2-3 weeks after the treatment. Some patients may also experience brusing to the treated area, however, this will clear up within 1-2 weeks. Patients must not drive after the procedure since they may still be affected by the sedation given to them before the procedure. Patients are also encouraged to walk after the procedure, however vigerous exercise can be resumed within a week.
